Vision and Principles for harnessing RD4SD

This document introduces a condensed version of the project participants vision for a more sustainable world in 2025 and the kind of science that contributes to it. This vision is complemented by 8 principles for its implementation. The final version was agreed during the Roadmaps 2 workshop in Athens (May 2013) and can be downloaded below.

Prototype of a ‘Resource Tool for funding of RD4SD’

An interactive web-based tool making the recommendations developed by the project participants and the examples provided for RD4SD funding measures available along a typical funding cycle. The tool is designed to become a living platform for administrators in RD4SD funding organisations supporting exchange of experiences and existing practices in this field. A prototype containing the VISION RD4SD results for this process can be found under http://infact.formas.se/preview/20-VISION_RD4SD_Resource_Tool___test_version/index.html#/21

The current state of the concept draft can be downloaded below.

Initiative for a ‘European/international Platform for RD4SD’

A draft concept has been developed for a platform that consolidates and integrates existing experiences, frameworks and approaches of RD4SD, linking existing networks and communities of RD4SD practice as well as integrating new actors necessary to develop this field. The initiative for such a platform rises from the need seen by the participants for a broader dialogue, continued learning, improvement and capacity building of researchers, policy makers and social agents at large. A draft concept has been developed and adapted during the Vision and Pathways 2 workshop in Lund (January 2013), see download below.

Documentation and synthesis reports from the VISION RD4SD workshops

The central activity of VISION RD4SD was the dialogue among the partners and observers of the project: representatives from science funding organisations from different European countries. This dialogue took place during the seven project workshops that have been summarized in the following synthesis reports:

Country and Regional Case Studies

To establish a basis for the on going work of the VISION RD4SD project 9 case studies have been conducted during 2011. These studies give an overview over the state of the art of RD4SD funding programmes and initiatives, research agenda setting, evaluation and community building in Europe. The studies provide brief introductions to the situation in the country or region and offer illustrative examples of how research is being harnessed for sustainability in an indicative set of EU Member States and sub-regions.

Ad-hoc Studies

A part of the project budget was set aside for additional ad-hoc studies on demand. They were commissioned to feed the dialogue with additional information where needed. The following ad-hoc studies are available:

Response to EU Green Paper

The first result produced by VISION RD4SD during the Kick-off meeting in 2011 is the projects feedback to the European Commission Green Paper “From Challenges to Opportunities: Towards a Common Strategic Framework for EU Research and Innovation funding”. It has been fed into the official consulting process for the development of the next EU Common Strategic Framework.
